Band 6 – Year Long – Prerequisite: None

The 6th grade band is an introductory/beginning course in instrumental music at RCS. Elements of music theory and music history will be taught through performance in band and students will focus on basic fundamental techniques on their instrument, which are limited to: flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Students will participate in three large concerts per year and prepare through methodology and appropriate literature for band. With instructor approval, interested students may switch to bass clarinet, saxophones, oboe, or bassoon during 2nd semester.

Band 7 – Year Long – Prerequisite: 6th Grade Band, Instructor Approval or Private Lessons to gain 6th grade knowledge

The 7th grade band is an intermediate course in instrumental music at RCS. Elements of music theory and music history will be taught through performance in band and students will focus on the continued development and expansion of fundamental techniques on their instrument. Students will participate in three large concerts per year and prepare through methodology and appropriate literature for band.

Band 8 – Year Long – Prerequisite: Instructor Approval, 6th and 7th grade band/Audition

The 8th grade band is an advance middle school course in instrumental music at RCS. Elements of music theory and music history will be taught through performance in band and students will focus on higher level extended techniques on their instrument as well as advanced literature studies. Students will participate in three large concerts per year and one festival with preparation through methodology and appropriate literature for band. Advanced students may earn advanced opportunities with the high school band program and musical theatre production.

High School Symphonic Band – Year Long – Prerequisite: Instructor Approval, Middle School Band/Audition

The High School Symphonic Band is made up of students grade 9-12 and houses a full symphonic band instrumentation. Elements of music theory, history and style will be taught through performance in band. Students will focus on extended and higher level technical application, preparation of standard and core literature on their instrument. The Symphonic Band will participate in three large ensemble concerts, two competitive festivals and chamber music studies. Students in this ensemble that are interested in extended opportunities may participate in the RCS Pep Band, Jazz Band, chamber ensembles, and musical theatre pit orchestra in the Spring.
